Steve Garvey Autograph Signing - Photos and Recap

On Sunday June 22, 2014, OC Nissan in Irvine hosted a Steve Garvey autograph signing.  Garvey was scheduled to sign from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.  Before Garvey arrived OC Nissan offered free hot dogs, Dodger Dogs, popcorn, and drinks.  A few minutes before 1:30pm, we were notified that Garvey was stuck in traffic and running late.  We were also reminded that he would only be signing one item per person.  I'm sure there were several people that got multiple items signed as Garvey is a notoriously nice guy at free signings.

Garvey finally arrived around 2:00pm and after signing items and taking pictures inside the dealership for employees, he started signing.  The line moved quickly and Garvey was kind enough to sign to items for me.  He signed an 8x10 and a bat.  Without even asking for it, he added his 1974 NL MVP inscription to my bat.  Take a look at the pictures below.

Thanks to OC Nissan for a well organized event and for the free food!

Ramon Sessions & Steve Garvey Autograph Signings - Recap & Photos

On Saturday March 24th, Lakers point guard, Ramon Sessions made an autograph appearance at America's Tire in Long Beach and was sponsored by Kumho Tires.  Sessions was scheduled to sign autographs from 3pm - 4pm.  I arrived at America's Tire at around 1:15pm and there were about 150 people already in line.  I noticed everyone in line had wristbands and was glad to see it since only the frist 200 people were guaranteed autographs.  At approximately 2pm, Kumho representatives came back around with more wristbands and I was given #187.  More on the wristbands later.

Sessions arrived on time at 3pm and after taking a few pictures with Kumho Tires and America's Tire reps, he started signing around 3:15pm.  They provided free 8x10's to anyone that didn't have an item to get signed.  At around 3:40pm one of the security guys started coming around the line saying he noticed people were getting back in line with their wristbands or were swapping wristbands with other people.  He said because of this not everyone with a wristband would be guaranteed an autograph.  I was pretty irritated since i had been in line for almost 3 hours.  I suggested to him they should cut people's wristbands off after they get their autograph instead of leaving them on!  After a few more people got their auto's, they started cutting off wristbands.

By 3:50pm I made it to the front of the line and got two items signed.  I had a generic Lakers 8x10 signed and since Ramon was really cool I asked him to sign one of the free 8x10's as well.  I really didn't have time to talk to him but did welcome him to L.A. and he replied, "it's good to be here".  I took my autos, jumped in my truck and headed to the city of Tustin where Steve Garvey was making an autograph appearance at Tustin Nissan.  Check out the photos from the Sessions signing

After making a quick pit stop for gas, I was on the freeway headed for Tustin.  Garvey was scheduled to sign from 4pm-6pm at Tustin Nissan so I wasn't too worried that I wouldn't make it.  I arrived at Tustin Nissan by 4:25pm and jumped in line.  There were probably only about 25 people in line and I noticed several people arriving who were also at the Sessions signing.

I already have several Garvey autographs on baseballs and photos however, I wanted to get his bobblehead signed.  While in line I got to chat with David and Alex after they got their autos.  These guys are always at signings and are two of the coolest guys you'll run into.  They both got several items signed.

There were a few people in front of me and behind me that had already gone through the line and were back getting more things signed.  The line was short enough and it was early enough so I didn't mind.  However, Tustin Nissan management were getting a little irritated that they "noticed people getting back in line."  I made it to the front of the line within 20 minutes and got my bobblehead signed.  Garvey asked if I had his musical bobblehead and I told him, I did not but it was on my list of must gets.  Garvey kinda butchered the bobblehead autograph but oh well, since it was free, I didn't mind.  They also had some stock 5x7 photos and Garvey was kind enough to sign one for me too.  Check out the pics below.

Overall, two great free signings.  Aside from people swapping out wristbands both signings ran smooth.  Like I told the Kumho employees, just cut off the wristbands.  Another mistake they made at the Sessions signing was they just handed people wristbands instead of putting them directly on the person's wrist.  Several people also pulled the, "my kids or my friends are on their way" and were handed more wristbands.  I generally don't care if you try and get in line a second time but get in at the back of the line, don't cut in front of others who haven't gone through once yet.  Just my opinion.

Tip of the cap to Ernest at dodgersblueheaven.com for the info on the Garvey signing.

Garvey, Lopes, Cey & Russell Signing - Pictures & Recap

On Saturday February 4, 2012, Hall of Fame Sports hosted a signing at Frank & Son with former Dodgers, Davey Lopes, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Don Newcombe and Lenny Harris.  I wasn't interested in an auto from Harris and I already have Newcombe on an 8x10, bobblehead and baseball.  I have the Record Setting Infield on a few items as well.  However, I started a 1981 World Series Champions project a few months ago and needed to add the infield.

Russell and Cey were scheduled to sign from 10:00am to 11:30am and Garvey & Lopes were scheduled for 11:00am to 12:30pm.  I arrived a little late at around 11:15am and Russell and Cey had already left the stage area.  Luckily, they were still in the back and returned to sign for a few of us late comers.  As I had met them both before, I really didn't say much besides hello and thank you.

Davey Lopes took a look at my 16x20 photo and commented the MLB Championship Trophy is widely considered the worst Championship Trophy of the four major sports.  He then proceeded to tell me the trophy for the team and the smaller versions for the players are made by Tiffany & Co.  It was something I didn't know and I thought it was pretty cool.  He mentioned the individual trophies cost between $30,000 and $40,000 and most of the players bought them but very few of the coaches did.  I thanked him for his time and the good story and moved onto the Steve Garvey line.  Garvey was all smiles as always and was great with the young kids.

Being that Hall of Fame Sports has had the Record Setting Infield sign often at Frank & Sons, the crowd wasn't too big.  All four players were posing for pictures and taking their time chatting with fans.  Overall it was a great signing.  Take a look at my pictures below.

Steve Garvey says upgrade Dodger Stadium & extend Kemp, Kershaw & Ethier

Former Dodger All-Star Steve Garvey participated in AM 710 ESPNLA's "Lunch with a Legend". The lunch event took place at Morton's The Steakhouse in Woodland Hills.  Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com reports Garvey told Mark Willard and Mychal Thompson if his & Orel Hershiser's investment group were to purchase the Dodgers, he would make needed changes to Dodger Stadium.

Garvey:

"One of the first steps is to make a significant investment into refurbishing the stadium and bringing it up to 21st century style technology in entertainment. We're far behind, if you look at those two electronic message boards, I mean, it's embarrassing. Not to have two new state of the art or even one large one."

When asked how he would handle personnel moves if he were running the team Garvey said he would extend Clayto Kershaw, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier.
Garvey:

"I like Ethier, I like his attitude. I think we would lock him up for another four or five years."

Garvey on Dodger Stadium:

"It's a cathedral of baseball. There's so much history, but the problem is it's the third oldest stadium in baseball. It's going to be 50 years old and it needs things done to it that can approach the quality and atmosphere of new stadiums. We have a great business plan to be able to do some things that will really change the atmosphere of the stadium."

Garvey on being part of ownership:

"This is a long-term investment in Dodger baseball. If you think of it this way, then you do all these things to enhance the experience for the fans. That's what, God willing, we'll have the opportunity to do. We will be an ownership of and for the fans."

Steve Garvey & Orel Hershiser Teaming Up to Buy Dodgers

I just finished watching a story on ESPN's SportsCenter on how former Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser has joined Steve Garvey's investment group that is interested in buying the Dodgers.  The official name of the group is now the Garvey-Hershiser Group.

Hershiser told the L.A. Daily News:

"Garvey approached me, we've always talked and communicated through the years. He was a little more of a role model for me, the way he did things. I was like, 'That's what I want to do.' He's been a good businessman.  When he called and said he wanted me to be part of this group, I said, 'Garv, I'd always be interested in helping and doing something like this that would be a lot of fun.' We're forming a group that's investigating situations as they arise. That would be very interesting for me."

Garvey on why he approached Hershiser:

"I was just thinking to myself, we had so many similarities the success of the team, rapport with fans, life after baseball, I gave him a call. We had lunch. I told him he might be the perfect fit. He loves what our business plan is, and he's talked about how he could make contributions. He's a pretty smart guy, and he's the type of person I think would be a great asset for us."

Hershisher on Dodger fans:

"The fan base, they deserve better, The Los Angeles Dodgers are part of the fabric of Los Angeles. Their pride and their heart have been hurt by what's gone on and what's happening. It will take a large effort to restore that and I'm pulling for McCourt and MLB.
It hurts my heart. It's about restoring the confidence of the fan base and significant pride of the city. The Lakers have done a great job there. The Dodgers need to regain their form. Not in an old-style way but in a way that in my mind, I see them progressing and reaching back to the past."

Steve Garvey Autograph Appearance - Fan Pictures & Recap

Back on May 13th I shared the information on Stever Garvey's signing today at Porky's.  The information was given to me by blog reader Robert M.  You can see my original post here

Robert attended today's signing and shared the following e-mail:

I went to the Steve Garvey signing today at Porky's card shop in Woodland Hills at 1:00pm.  I got there at 12:30pm and there was about 15 people hanging out in front of the shop. You could see Steve in there signing memorabilia for the store owner.  About 1:15 there was probably about 40 people in line and they started letting us in the shop 10 people at a time. I made the 2nd group and nobody was rushing anybody, it was very relaxed.  I had Steve sign 2 bats and a baseball.  He took the black bat and started check swinging it, said "This is a great bat!"  There was nobody behind me so I chatted with him about his son signing with USC and playing at Dodger stadium on June 3rd, also asked when he was gonna get in the HOF?  He said "We will see.  Hopefully soon."  Steve is a true professional and always hooks up a sweet looking autograph.

Porky's staff was very cool with the whole event.  Nobody to hurry up and rush you through.

Here are Robert's pics:

Thanks again to Robert for sharing his experience and pictures.  The bats really look great!
I've never been to a signing at Porky's but it sounds like they know what they are doing.  It's always good to hear how fans have good experiences at signings.  Whether they be paid signings or free signings.

DodgerBobble also posted about the Garvey signing.  He attended the signing today and you can read about it and see his pictures here

I attended a Garvey signing at Black Angus back in April you can see my pics and read about it right here

Replica Dodger Sports Illustrated Covers

As a baseball fan and more specifically a Dodger fan, I have over the years collected signed 8x10 photos, baseball, mini-helmets and other memoribilia.  Over the last twenty years, my interest level has ebbed and flowed in synch with the money in my bank account.  I've gotten back into the hobby in the last five years and have attended many free autograph appearances as well as many autograph appearances where I was charged for autographs.  I will save my "list" for another post but wanted to share a small tip for those that enjoy getting photos signed.  Two years ago, I attended a Kevin Love autograph signing at the Upper Deck store in Huntington Beach, CA.  I'm a huge UCLA fan and wanted a UCLA item signed.  While searching on line I came across the Sports Illustrated Covers website.  It's a Sports Illustrated site where they sell replica's of some of their past covers.

Since Tommy Lasorda, Ramon Martinez and Steve Garvey have upcoming signings scheduled I thought it would be a good time to share this info with those looking for a different type of item to get signed.  There are several Dodgers who have graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and the website has most of them for sale.  Here are some pictures of the replica covers.

The replica covers are 11x14 and sell for $19.95. Here is the link
