Great News! Vin Scully to return in 2014

The great Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times is reporting the Dodgers will make an announcement Friday confirming Vin Scully will return for the 2014 season.

"It has been such an exciting, enjoyable, wonderful season — the big crowds in the ballpark, everybody is talking about the ballclub, and I really respect, admire and love the management — so everything just fell into place."
"I really still enjoy it immensely. My health is good, thank God. So why not? And my wife said, 'Why not?' as well.  Just the thought of walking away from it to retirement — and looking out the window or something? It's just too good. As a baseball man, and someone who has always loved the game, the situation and the conditions are perfect."
When asked if he would consider an offer to announce a few innings on television if the Dodgers make the World Series, Scully told Shaikin:
"I wouldn't feel that I deserved to be there.  I would feel that I would be an intruder. And I don't ever want to be that."
"Even if the Dodgers go into the World Series, it's run by networks now — understandably, because they pay the big money. So, no, I wouldn't want to do something just because someone said, 'Oh, let him do an inning.' I wouldn't want any part of that."
I the Dodgers do indeed make the World Series, we'll still be able to hear Vin on the radio.  I couldn't be happier that he'll be back in 2014 for his 65th season!

Matt Kemp "Wear Your Allegiance" New Era Commercial

While rehabbing, Matt Kemp made some time to be part of a new 60-second spot for New Era caps "Wear Your Allegiance campaign.  You can check out the spot below which includes Kemp eating a sandwich while soaking in a tub.

Seeing Kemp eating his sandwich while in the whirlpool reminded me of the Seinfeld episode when George Costanza tried to eat a sandwich while "in bed".

How do you "Wear Your Allegiance"?  The classic LA logo? Variant colors? Specialty styles?

Dodger Autographs - Dodgers vs Yankees 7/30/13

On Tuesday July 30, 2013, the Dodgers hosted the Yankees in the first game of a two game series.  As part of a package my dad and I purchased through MasterCard, we were able to be on the field during Dodgers batting practice.  Thinking this would be a great opportunity to obtain some autographs, my nephew and I came prepared with 8x10s, baseballs, and baseball cards.

As with most days at Dodger Stadium, even though we had the advantage of being on the field during batting practice, some Dodgers were tough autographs to get.  Instead of talking about who shunned us, i'll share pictures of which autographs we were able to obtain.  First up, is the Yasiel Puig autograph on the 8x10 above.  Even though, there is a tiny smudge on one of the 6's, this photo looks clean!

Take a look at the pics below.

Andre Ethier 8x10

Nick Punto 8x10

Hanley Ramirez 8x10

Maury Wills Playbill and Jaime Jarrin Playbill

Adrian Gonzalez on a Trinity Bat Co. bookmark

Mark McGwire tossed me a pre-signed batting practice ball

Don Mattingly

Yasiel Puig side paneled this ball

So I got Tim Wallach on the other side

Rick Honeycutt and Steve Yeager twice

Hanley Ramirez and Chris Capuano twice

Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier

Anytime you come away with autographs at Dodger Stadium is a good day.  The Dodgers picking up the win, made it even better!

Andre's Carne Asada Sunday

On Sunday July 28, 2013, after the Dodgers beat the Reds 1-0, Andre Ethier hosted a Carne Asada Sunday.  The Carne Asada Sunday was a fundraiser for Ethier's favorite charity, the Union Rescue Mission in Downtown Los Angeles.  Only 125 tickets were sold to this event so it wasn't very crowded in the Loge Terrace.  After the game was over, the area was opened up to those with tickets and Chef Merito provided carne asada tacos, rice & beans for everyone.  Soft drinks and water were also provided for everyone.  After about 30-40 minutes Andre arrived for a question and answer period hosted by Dodgers historian Mark Langill.

After a few standard questions about Andre and the team's hot streak the forum was opened up for fans to ask questions.  There was only time for about four questions and none of them were that ground breaking or earth shattering.  An interesting note, Andre was talking about how he just finished soaking in an ice tub in the locker room, which drew a scream from a female fan.  Ethier laughed at the scream and told the fan, "next time, you can join me, the tub holds up to six people."  His response drew some more screams from the female fans in attendance.

It was announced that Andre would not be signing any autographs, which was a bit of a disappointment but everyone was allowed to take a professional photo with him.  Additionally, the photos were printed on the spot and everyone was given a gift bag.  The gift bag included an adjustable Dodger cap, a Jaime Jarrin bobblehead, and some Chef Merito seasoning products.

Overall it was a very cool experience and Andre was very chatty and personable with everyone in attendance.  Chef Merito matched the $5000 that was raised through ticket sales and donated another $5000 to the Union Rescue Mission.  Check out my pictures of the event below.
