Chad Billingsley Heading to the Disabled List

It's crazy how during Spring Training the Dodgers starting rotation was over flowing with pitchers and here we are three weeks into the season and Stephen Fife has been called up to take a spot in the starting rotation.  Zack Grienke was the first to go on the disabled list with a broken collarbone and was followed by Chris Capuano and his pulled calf muscle.  Today Chad Billingsley head to the disabled list with right elbow soreness.

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

"Billingsley tried to throw a brief bullpen session Friday at Camden Yards, but said "it didn't feel right, didn't feel I could throw where I should be able to." He had an MRI Saturday, but until ElAttrache can compare the results to last year's MRI, the extent of the injury is unclear.

The Dodgers knew on Saturday that Billingsley wouldn't make the Sunday start and flew in Fife, but didn't announce the move until Sunday. Mattingly said the club had considered keeping Billingsley active and just skipping a start."
Can it get any worse?  The Dodgers offense is struggling with runners in scoring position and what was once a good starting rotation is now marginal at best.  The team needs to just man up and get it done before the wheels fall off and they fall deeper into this hole.

Jackie Robinson Day - Statue & Photos

Last night on April 15, 2013, the Dodgers celebrated Jackie Robinson Night as they took on the Padres.  Unfortunately, the Boys in Blue came up short and lost but the pre-game festivities were pretty awesome.  Before the first pitch Don Newcombe, Jackie's wife Rachel Robinson, Jackie's daughter Sharon, and Roy Campanella's son Roy Campanella II and one of Campanella's daughters, were introduced to the Dodger Stadium crowd.  Next, actor Harrison Ford, who portrays Branch Rickey in the movie 42 threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  Up next Lakers legend and huge Brooklyn Dodger fan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got the game going with the phrase, "It's Time for Dodgers Baseball!"  Branch Rickey's great-granddaughter, Kelley Jakle, sang God Bless America during the 7th-inning stretch.

Before the game the first 40,000 fans in attendance received a statue of Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, and Roy Campanella.  You can see the front view picture above.  Take a look at a few more pictures below.

Also given away to fans were mini 42 movie posters.

During the first through third inning, Jackie Robinson's daughter Sharon was schedule to sing copies of her book, Jackie Robinson: American Hero, in the right field souvenir tent.  I purchased the book and then had it signed by Sharon Robinson. Take a look at the pics.

Even though the Dodgers came up short against the Padres, it was a good night celebrating Jackie Robinson.  The SGA statue is very cool and a welcome addition to my Dodgers collection.

Tim Wallach Autograph Signing - Recap & Photos

On Saturday April 6, 2013, Tim Wallach was scheduled to sign autographs from 11am to 1pm at Harry's Dugout in the city of Whittier.  I had never been to Harry's dugout so I decided to head out early to give myself some extra time.  I arrived a few minutes after 10am and found only a couple of people waiting outside.  At 11am when Wallach arrived, the line had grown to about 25 people.

Wallach began signing right away and was very cordial to everyone in line.  Before he signed my items, he asked if I had been out to a game yet this season.  I let him know I was at Opening Day and he replied, "that was a good day".  I thanked him for signing my items and he thanked me for coming to the signing.  Overall this was an excellent signing.  Harry's Dugout is a relatively small card shop so only about 4 or 5 fans are allowed inside at time.  This allows for a more personal experience.  Fans can chat with the signer and take posed pictures as well.  I got a ROMLB signed by Wallach as well as a Cal State Fullerton mini helmet.  Wallach was the 1979 Golden Spikes Award winner for being the best college player and was a member of the Cal State Fullerton 1979 College World Series championship team.  Check out my pics below.

Sandy Koufax First Pitch

For those of you who weren't able to be at the Ravine for Opening Day and for those who were unable to watch on Prime Ticket, here is video of the pre-game festivities. The Dodgers put together a video of other Los Angeles "stars" helping get the ceremonial first pitch baseball to Dodger Stadium. Also included in this video is the ceremonial first pitch thrown by Sandy Koufax.
